Chellarams Pic has introduced Real Activ malted food drink into the Nigerian market.

This, according to the company, is part of its strategy towards meeting the needs of more Nigerian consumers by expanding its product portfolio.

Speaking at the inauguration of the product in Lagos last weekend, the company’s Chief Operating Officer (Brands Division), Mr. Sanjay Pradhan, said the Real Activ malted drink offered a nutritious alternative to existing brands of malted and chocolate food drinks in the Nigerian market.

He said the cutting edge of Real Activ is its inherent superior quality, while remaining comparatively affordable.

The product is specially formulated in UK, combining the goodness of barley and malt extract, cocoa powder, glucose syrup with that of numerous vitamins and minerals to produce a delicious, delightfully-rich and nutritious food drink, which provides instant energy.

“The product gives a natural taste of malted drink; also, it is an instant source of energy that keeps one active all day long,” he said, adding that the product was manufactured and distributed in Nigeria by Chellarams with licence from Regal Food Limited of United Kingdom.

The company’s Group Chief Information Officer, Dr. Harbhajan Batth, said the company was a major player in the FMGC arena, and had good equipment for food packaging as well as a quality control laboratory that enhanced the quality of its products.

“We are leveraging on our numerous packaging machines that could be used to package products such as milk powder, coffee, custard, tea and others to package this product and we can say that the unique design and packaging of our product reflects the good quality barley and malt extract contained in it,” he stated.

Chellarams plc, one of the countries food packing companies has been awarded the ISO 9001: 2008 certifications for its food and chemical divisions, following adoption of a quality management system, as required by international organisation of standardisation.

Presenting the certificate to Chellarams, Joseph Odumodu, director-general of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) congratulated the management and staff of the company for achieving the feat of the ISO certification of their food and chemical divisions at the first attempt, as well as the adoption of a quality management system as required by the International Organisation of Standardisation.

Odumode who was represented by Solomon Onafowokan, director in the organisation, however urged the company to ensure that it does not deviate from the quality management process that has been put in place and which led to the award of the ISO certification.

He noted that Chellarams was in the league of companies that have improved on their quality game, by upgrading from SON MANCAP certification to the internationally recognised ISO 9001: 2008 certification.

Solomon Onafowokan, chairman of the company, receiving the award, assured SON that the company’s determination to improve on the standard gave the ISO certification. For him, the award would serve as the impetus that would steer the company towards providing more quality products and services to its customers.

“Our company’s quality parameters for our food and chemical divisions are of international standard and we promise to regularly update in order to sustain the confidence reposed in us by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the International Standard Organisation.”

The ISO 9001: 2008 certification is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS) which provides companies with a set of principles that ensure a common sense approach to the management of business activities to consistently achieve customer satisfaction.

THE Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has awarded Chellarams Plc the NIS ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System certification.

With the new development, the food and chemical divisions of the group have now been internationally certified.

Presenting the certificate to the company’s Chairman, Asiwaju Solomon Onafowokan, in Lagos at the weekend, SON’s Director-General, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, who lauded the firm for the feat of bagging the award at first attempt, tasked it on sustaining the quality which the brand had been identified, noting that “quality is a moving target”.

Represented by the organisation’s Executive Director, Laboratory Services, Mr. Louis Njoku, Odumodu reminded the company that the award was not a fait accompli as it is subjected to six-month audits to ensure compliance with provisions of the certification, warning that it could be withdrawn in the face of intractable infractions and non-conformities.

He said: “The relevance of quality management in the current competitive market environment cannot be over-emphasised. The NIS ISO9001: 2008 Quality Management System approach provides a globally recognised and acceptable solution to the challenges associated with quality management.

“The system has been placed on six monthly surveillance audit to ensure continuing suitability and effectiveness of the implementation of the quality management system. In the cause of the audit exercises, where non-conformities are observed and effectively corrected within specified time frame, the system will retain the certificate. However, the certificate will be withdrawn if the structures in the place for certification break down and necessary actions are not taken on observed non-conformances,” Odumodu cautioned.

Onafowokan, in his acceptance speech, assured SON of improving on the standard that gave room for the award.

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), one of the global leaders in the fast food service industry, opened its first outlet at the City mall in Onikan, Lagos on Monday, December 14.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Adeniyi Oyemade, performed the formal opening ceremony on behalf of the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.

The brand was brought to Nigeria, via Devyan International Nig Ltd (formed from a joint venture between RJ Corp of India and Chellarams Plc) and an agreement with Yum Restaurants International (YRI), who are the franchise owners of the KFC brand.

Marc Schreuder, the chief executive officer of Devyan International said the tripartite partnership, was born out of the recognition of Nigerians’ crave for excellent and quick service along with quality foods without leaving the country shores. Bruce Layzell, the business development manager of Yum Brands added that the quality of service from KFC outlets in other parts of the world is what they will offer in Nigeria.

The new fast-food spot would open seven days of the week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m..

Harland Sanders founded Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1952 at Louisville, Kentucky, United States. KFC has been operating under Yum Brands since 1997, when the company spun off from Pepsi-co as Trico Global restaurant Inc.

Woolworths is back to Nigeria. But this time as an offspring of a multi million dollar strategic joint venture of listed Nigeria company, Chellarams Plc and Woolworths, a top South African retailer. Christened after the latter partner, Woolworths Retail Stores Nigeria Limited in a space of a week commissioned two vast retail outlets in Ikeja City Mall, Alausa and Palms in Victoria Island.

The company is set to open another store shortly at Polo Park in Enugu and seven more stores within the next two years in various parts of the country.

Speaking to the media shortly before the commissioning ceremony of the Ikeja City Mall Woolworth retail store, Woolworths Divisional Executive of the International division, Mr. John Fraser noted that there is there is a strong market in Nigeria.

‘We are excited to come to Nigeria, though there are infrastructure issues but the market is here,’ he stated.

Elated at the take-off of the collaborative venture, Fraser and the Group Managing Director of Chellarams, Mr. Aditya Chellarams, expressed optimism in the dual transaction.

‘We have found the right partner in Chellarams to grow the Woolworths brand in Nigeria. Our partnership means we can deliver to customers the best retail offering possible tailored to local market needs. Our partners bring knowledge of local trading conditions and we bring the quality, value, innovation and fashion our South Africa customers know and appreciate. It is the best of both worlds,’ Fraser said.

He added that the company was confident of its investment in Nigeria and was very pleased with the growth prospects of the Nigerian market.

According to him, joint ventures with local partners, such as Chellarams, is the new business model for Woolworths’ expansion plans in other African countries. ‘We have moved away from the franchise model we had in some African countries. It is not only a better profit model for Woolworths, but it is also better for customers,’ Fraser said.

On his part, Chellarams Group MD said the joint venture was another milestone in the company’s efforts to diversify.

The Chairman, Chellarams Group, Asiwaju Solomon Onafowoka added, ‘We are excited that we are bringing Woolworths back to Nigeria. We had won the franchise in 2002 but later shut down due to import restriction. But now we have joint venture, which is a better arrangement. According to Fraser, the new stores like every other Woolworths store irrespective of the location offer a selection of Woolworths beautifully made and stylish things for the home, from attractive, easy-care bed linen to stylish décor items as well as a selection from an extensive range of own-label fragrances and bath & body products.

‘All Woolworths beauty ranges are formulated according to Woolworths Good Beauty principles, which means all ingredients are mild and gentle, no mineral oils or petrochemical ingredients are used, and every product has been thoroughly assessed by Woolies’ technologists to ensure that they’re safe to use,’ the company assured.

It is often said that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This was the case when Chellarams Plc organized an inter-departmental football competition amongst it’s staff. The event commenced on Saturday 25th August, 2012 with and opening match between it’s warehouse department  which was represented in the company’s Oldenburger milk brand and sachet plant being represented by the Regal milk brand at Holy Saviour’s College Isolo.
Chellarams Plc is a diversified organization with operations in Manufacturing, Brand Development, Distribution, Service and Property Development, employing over 1500 Nigerians.
The match was declared opened by the Company’s Group Director of Finance, Mr. Shuhas Kulkarni. Speaking at the event, the Group Chief Information Officer, Dr. H.S Batth emphasized the objective of the inter-department football competition as an avenue to encourage physical fitness amongst staff and to foster team spirit which will bring out the best in the group to ensure, positive communication and the ability to  work closely together as a team to solve organizational challenges.
At the end of the football match, sachet plant (Team Regal ) defeated warehouse pioneer (Team Oldenburger) three goals to nil (3-0).

One of Nigeria’s long standing business giants and leading conglomerates, Chellarams Plc, has just entered into a joint venture business partnership with Woolworths, South Africa. The partnership which resulted in the establishment of Woolworths Retail Stores Nigeria Limited was consummated recently at the Isolo office of Chellarams Plc, with the signing of the memorandum of understanding and other necessary documents.

Woolworths Retail Stores Nigeria Limited is set to commence business in Nigeria with the planned opening of 3 stores in Nigeria in December 2011. In addition, and as a futuristic agenda, 7 more stores would be added to its chain of stores in the next three years; making a total of 10. The first 3 stores will be located in the Palms Shopping Mall in Victoria Island, the new Ikeja City Mall and Polo Park Shopping Mall, Enugu.

In recognition of Chellarams Plc trademark of high quality goods and services to customers as well as its contribution to the Nigerian economy, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has presented the Certificate of NIS ISO 9001: 2008 to the company.
The firm has therefore joined the elite club of International standard Organisation (ISO) certified companies in Nigeria.

At the presentation ceremony which took place at Chellarams’ compound in Lagos last week, the Director-General of SON, Dr. Joe Odumodu, lauded the firm’s commitment to providing quality management system and products required by international standards, which basically led to the certification award.

He noted that the company was certified as a result of its conformity to the laid down rules strictly followed it. “This is an indication that you are living up to expectation, and have been consistent in keeping the standard which culminated in the approval of the certificate of NIS ISO by SON,” he said.
Odumodu, who was represented by the Executive Director, Laboratory Service of SON, Louis Njoku, at the ceremony however urged the company not to relent in its effort to uphold the quality management process which prompted the award of the certificate.

The SON boss hinted that Chellarams was now in the league of firms with improved quality game by upgrading from SON MANCAP certification to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2008 certification.
